Unseen and elusive, the hare lives mostly by night. Believed to be shape-shifters, hares have long been associated in with witches and transformation in England's West country.
As one tale goes, there was a hunter in pursuit of a hare who unluckily ran through a coven of witches deep in ceremony. Furious that he'd upset their ritual, the next time he was out hunting, one of the witches of the moor transformed into a hare and chased the hunter throughout the countryside until he and his hounds were caught and turned to stone.
