The son of a river god and a nymph, Narcissus was promised a long life, provided he never recognised himself.
He gained many admirers, entranced by his beauty but he rejected them all.
A cautionary tale of self-obsession, Narcissus stares at his reflection in a pool of water, while his rejected suitor, Echo, looks on.
Devastated by his rejection, she withdrew from the world to waste away.
Upon hearing this, the Goddess Nemesis responded by causing Narcissus to fall in love with this own reflection which he was mesmerised by until he died from sorrow at not being able to obtain the object of his desire, himself.
