To be as 'mad as a March hare' is an English phrase that originates from the European hares' antics in the March breeding season. Owing to the time they devote to courtship and coupling along with the rate at which they breed, hares are viewed as icons of fertility in the Pagan tradition with the hare being honoured in rituals celebrating springtime, eventually evolving into the present day Easter bunny.

March Hare behaves in a most unpredictable manner as host of an outdoor tea party in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Loud, rude, energetic and more insane than the Hatter, March Hare encourages Alice to have some wine when there is nothing but tea offered at the party table before bizarrely attempting to stuff the Dormouse into a teapot.
